Israel’s Assuta Medical Center has implemented a change in its breast cancer treatment program. The innovation concerned the procedure of radiotherapy, the principle of which is based on a point effect, during the removal of the neoplasm.
Patients will no longer have to undergo a long course for a month after surgery. The innovative technique allows for spot treatment during tumor removal, which greatly reduces the recovery period and spares the patient from the side effects of radiation therapy.
According to Dr. Daphne Barsuk, a senior specialist at the hospital, this treatment has significant advantages: precise irradiation of the tumor, the flow of which does not go beyond its borders. A huge number of postoperative processes are minimized, which reduces the period of hospitalization. The patient can return to her country of residence within a few weeks.
The innovative procedure can be performed for any indication, regardless of the size of the tumor or age of the patient. The decision to use this method is made on the basis of the diagnostic results obtained and in accordance with the consent of the patient.
